Chemical Peel Prep: How to Get the Most From Your Results

Chemical peels can be an amazing way to improve the appearance and health of your skin. They can help address concerns like uneven texture, dullness, pigmentation, breakouts, and signs of aging by encouraging the skin to shed damaged surface cells and reveal fresher, more radiant skin underneath.

But getting the best results from a chemical peel isn't just about what happens during your appointment. What you do before and after your peel matters, too.

At BD Aesthetics, we customize treatments based on your skin, your goals, and what your skin can safely tolerate. Here are some of the most important things to know before your chemical peel.

1. Start With the Right Skin Prep

One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking they need to aggressively exfoliate their skin before a peel.

The goal isn't to "strip" your skin before treatment. Instead, we want your skin barrier to be in a healthy, supported state so your skin is prepared for the treatment.

Depending on your skin and goals, your pre-peel routine may include products that support hydration, pigmentation control, acne management, or overall skin health.

Ingredients such as retinoids and exfoliating acids may need to be paused before your appointment, depending on the peel being performed and your individualized treatment plan.

2. Don't Over-Exfoliate

More exfoliation does not mean better results.

Using multiple exfoliating products, scrubs, or at-home treatments immediately before your peel can leave your skin unnecessarily irritated and sensitive.

A professional chemical peel is already designed to create a controlled exfoliation. Your job beforehand is to keep your skin calm, hydrated, and supported—not to try to recreate the peel at home.

3. Be Consistent With SPF

Daily sun protection is always important, but it's especially important when you're preparing for and recovering from a chemical peel.

UV exposure can contribute to pigmentation and can make your skin more vulnerable during the healing process.

Use a broad-spectrum SPF every day and be mindful of prolonged sun exposure before and after your treatment.

Your peel can help improve the appearance of your skin, but protecting those results is just as important.

4. Tell Us What You've Been Using on Your Skin

Your skincare routine gives us important information when determining whether you're ready for a peel.

Before your appointment, let us know about:

  • Prescription or over-the-counter retinoids

  • Exfoliating acids

  • Acne medications

  • Benzoyl peroxide

  • Recent waxing or hair removal

  • Other professional treatments

  • Any products that have recently caused irritation

Even products that are normally beneficial for your skin may need to be temporarily adjusted around your treatment.

5. Your Skin Doesn't Need to Be Perfect Before a Peel

A common misconception is that you need to have "perfect" skin before getting a chemical peel.

You don't.

Chemical peels can be incorporated into treatment plans for a variety of concerns, including acne, discoloration, uneven texture, and signs of aging. The important part is choosing the right peel at the right time for your skin.

That's why we don't take a one-size-fits-all approach.

6. What Should You Expect After Your Peel?

Depending on the type and strength of peel, you may experience some redness, dryness, tightness, flaking, or peeling afterward.

And here's something important:

Peeling isn't always the goal.

The amount of visible peeling doesn't determine how effective your treatment is. Your skin may respond differently than someone else's, and that's completely normal.

We'll provide you with specific aftercare instructions to help support your skin throughout the healing process.

7. Don't Pick or Peel Your Skin

If your skin does begin to flake, resist the urge to help it along.

Picking, pulling, or manually removing peeling skin can increase irritation and potentially lead to unwanted discoloration or other complications.

Let your skin naturally progress through the healing process and focus on keeping it comfortable and protected.

8. Give Your Skin Time

Chemical peels aren't about instant perfection.

Your skin may continue changing in the days and weeks following treatment as it goes through the renewal process. Depending on your concerns and treatment plan, you may benefit from a series of treatments rather than a single peel.

Think of a peel as one part of a bigger skincare plan, not a quick fix.

So, Is a Chemical Peel Right for You?

That depends on your skin.

A chemical peel is most beneficial when it's performed on skin that's properly assessed, prepared, and supported throughout the process.

At BD Aesthetics, we take the time to evaluate your skin and create a treatment plan designed around your individual goals. We use professional-grade treatments and skincare to help you improve your skin while maintaining its health and integrity.
