Sweep Before You Mop: Why Double Cleansing Makes Sense

You wouldn't mop a floor without sweeping first, right?

We like to think about double cleansing the same way.

Before you can really cleanse your skin, you have to remove everything that's sitting on it—makeup, sunscreen, oil, sweat, and whatever else your skin picked up throughout the day.

That's where the Sweep + Mop method comes in.

First, Sweep Away the Day

Your first cleanse is all about getting rid of the stuff sitting on the surface of your skin.

Think:

  • Makeup

  • SPF

  • Excess oil

  • Sweat

  • Dirt and daily buildup

Depending on what you're wearing and your skin type, this might be an oil cleanser, cream cleanser, or another gentle cleanser that does a great job breaking everything down.

The goal isn't to scrub your skin or strip it. You're simply getting rid of the day so your second cleanse can actually do its job.

Then, Mop

Once the makeup, SPF, and buildup are gone, it's time for your second cleanse.

This is where you can think a little more about what your skin actually needs.

For example, your second cleanser might be chosen based on whether your skin is:

  • Oily or acne-prone

  • Dry

  • Sensitive

  • Barrier-compromised

  • In need of a deeper cleanse

Your second cleanse doesn't necessarily have to be a completely different cleanser. Many gentle cleansers can work for either step.

Do You Actually Need Two Different Cleansers?

Not necessarily.

This is probably the biggest thing we want people to understand about double cleansing: you don't have to have one cleanser specifically labeled for your first cleanse and another specifically labeled for your second.

A lot of gentle cleansers can work for either step.

You might use the same cleanser twice. You might use an oil cleanser first and follow with a gel cleanser. Or you might switch things up depending on how much makeup or sunscreen you wore that day.

It really comes down to finding what works for your skin.

When Is Double Cleansing Most Helpful?

We especially love double cleansing at night if you've been wearing makeup and sunscreen all day.

Your first cleanse helps break everything down, and your second cleanse gives your skin a fresh start before the rest of your evening routine.

That said, more cleansing isn't always better. If your skin is feeling dry, tight, or irritated, your routine may need to be adjusted.

The goal is always clean skin—not stripped skin.

Sweep. Mop. Glow.

That's really all there is to it.

Sweep: Remove the day.

Mop: Cleanse your skin.

Glow: Finish the rest of your routine.

Double cleansing doesn't need to be complicated, and there definitely isn't one perfect combination that works for everyone.
